“Has it really?” he replies.
“Of course,” you answer. “All good scientists believe that. Besides, there’s all sorts of evidence that everything came about by evolution.1”
“One question,” he begins, “do you even believe in things like the laws of science, logic, and mathematics?”
“Of course I
do,” you say, not sure what he is getting at.
“So you believe that there are laws governing how matter and
concepts work that are constant at all times, in all places, for all people?”
“Well, I don’t know about that…”
“Then how do
you live your life? Do you ever wake up in the
morning worried that
gravity may have stopped working? Do you ever hit
yourself on the
head on purpose to see if maybe it will feel good
this time? Can
contradictions be true? If contradictions are true,
then they are
also false! How would it be object-tively wrong if
you paid 5 dollars
with a 20-dollar bill and got only 1 dollar back in
change? Maybe
mathematical laws aren’t the same for all bankers.2
You see, you do live like there are constant laws
that will never
change.”
You think for a moment to take it all in. “Okay, I get your point.”
“Here’s another question: are these universal, unchanging laws material or immaterial? Can you see, hear, smell, taste, or touch a law of logic?”
“I guess not,” you reply. Go to page 33.
